En 1497, los seguidores de Girolamo Savonarola en Florencia, siguiendo sus preceptos sobre el pecado, la vanidad, la codicia y la superficialidad de la sociedad y de la Iglesia, hicieron la hoguera de las vanidades. En esta hoguera se quemaron cuadros, vestidos, instrumentos musicales, libros, cosméticos… Algunos cuadros de maestros de la pintura fueron quemados aquel día. Por cierto, al final también Savonarola acabó en una hoguera en aquel mismo sitio.
In 1497, the supporters of Girolamo Savonarola in Florence, following his precepts about the sin, the vanity, the lust and the superficiality of the society and the Church, done the bonfire of vanities.
