En la Batalla de Alesia en la conquista de la Galia, Julio César sitió la ciudad con 80.000 hombres más la población civil para rendirla por hambre. Para asegurar el éxito, construyó una barrera de 18 km de largo encerrando la ciudad para evitar huidas. Durante el trabajo de construcción, parte de la caballería gala pudo escapar y esperando la llegada de ayuda para la ciudad, César construyó una nueva barrera de 21Km, dejando sus tropas entre ambas barreras. Es decir, ahora los romanos eran sitiadores y sitiados (voluntariamente). Las tropas de ayuda llegaron y hubo ataques a los romanos desde la ciudad y desde fuera.
